Fentanyl sublingual tablets treat severe pain by blocking pain signals to your brain. You place them under your tongue and let them dissolve. They belong to a group of medications called opioids.
What is this medication?
FENTANYL (FEN ta nil) treats severe pain. It works by blocking pain signals in the brain. It belongs to a group of medications called opioids. It is prescribed to treat breakthrough pain when long-acting pain medication does not work well enough.

What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
- Brain tumour
- Drug abuse or addiction
- Gallbladder disease
- Head injury
- Heart disease
- If you often drink alcohol
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Low blood pressure
- Lung or breathing disease, like asthma
- Mental illness
- Problems urinating
- Seizures
- Stomach or intestine problems
- An allergic or unusual reaction to fentanyl, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives
- Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
- Breast-feeding
How should I use this medication?
Take this medication by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Leave the tablet in the sealed blister pack until you are ready to take it. With dry hands, open the blister and gently remove the tablet. Place the tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve.
If more than one tablet is needed, spread them around the floor of your mouth under your tongue. Do not suck, swallow, or chew this medication. Do not take it more often than directed.
A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time.
Talk to your care team regarding the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
